The greatest barrier to regular prayer is unanswered prayer! I know, it sounds crazy (or stupidly simple) but more people would pray if more prayers were answered. Don’t you agree?
Why are some prayers answered and not others? Let’s see…
I believe there are several reasons why prayer goes unanswered;
- Not knowing God
- Not knowing God’s Will
- Not following God’s teaching
- Not acting on God’s promise
- Not forgiving others
We will look at each of these using scripture to help us to get answers to our prayers.
Will our prayers go unanswered if we pray to another god?
If you worship other gods and seek answers from them you may get some of what you want – but you will never get all of what you need.
- Knowing God, turning back to The Truth.
There is only One God. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to Timothy, makes this clear and reveals (through the inspiration of The Holy Ghost) who God is;
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; – 1 Timothy 2:5
Jesus Christ is God. Jesus tells his disciples who they should pray to and why;
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. – John 14:13-14
We must ask (pray) in the name of Jesus Christ – to give glory to God, The Father (by believing in the power and glory of the name of Jesus Christ). When we do this, He (Jesus Christ, God The Son) will do what is asked to answer our prayer.
The Son of God continues;
And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. – John 16:23
Jesus gives a promise that God, The Father, will answer our prayer when we come to Him in the name of His Son. The Father will give us what we need.
Jesus continues to explain His position (as our mediator seated beside God, The Father) and what He will do for us when we ask in His name;
At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. – John 16:26-27
Jesus Christ tells us clearly that we should pray to The Father, using the name of The Son, to ask God to answer our prayer with love – because He (God, The Father) loves us because we love Jesus Christ (God, The Son).
So why so much confusion around prayer?
- Why do Catholics pray to Mary?
- Why do Muslims pray to Allah?
- Why do Hindus pray to multiple gods?
- Why do Buddhists seek wisdom through mantras and silent meditation?
- Why do new-age spiritualists seek answers from dark powers?
The simple answer is that all these groups of people are practicing religion and do not know God. God hates religion!
Can you pray to other gods? angels? spirits? demons? YES. But this is not what your Father God wants you to do. He will not answer these prayers. He will not protect you from the dark forces that all man-made religion represents and worships.
Follow the Word of God.
Pray to The Father, in the name of The Son, Jesus Christ.
Is Unanswered Prayer God’s Will?
When you worship The One True God and know His will, you can come to Him in prayer with confidence and expectation.
- Knowing God’s Will through The Living Word
The Living Word (The Holy Bible) is dead to those who do not believe but LIFE to those who are born-again by the spirit of God. The will of God is given to us in His Word. The Word is God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God – John 1.1
Jesus Christ is The Word.
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. – John 1:14
He came to reveal this truth to the children of Israel but they rejected him and denied the Word of God.
The Apostle John tells us as we read the gospel of John; He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. – John 1:10-11
Jesus told his accusers; Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. – John 5:39
Jesus Christ is The Living God. His Word and His actions while he walked on earth as man reveal the nature and will of God. His will to heal all who came to Him in faith. His will to give sight to the blind. His will to feed the hungry. His will to share the truth and set mankind free from the bondage of sin. His will to remove religion and bring man back into fellowship with God, The Father.
To know God’s will, we must know God’s Word. Simple, right?
Only when we believe, because without belief (in Jesus Christ and His death and resurrection into eternal life) we cannot hear the Word of God. The scriptures are dead to those who do not read them with the spirit of God as their teacher and guide. The Apostle Paul tells us this clearly in his letter to the church in Corinth;
But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
Paul goes on to explain that those who are not born of the spirit of God, cannot have knowledge and understanding of spiritual truths given to us from and by God;
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.
– Corinthians 2:10-16 King James Version (KJV)
We must be born-again into Christ to know and understand The Living Word. Without the spiritual re-birth, we remain in darkness and God’s will is not revealed to us. Satan and his powers of darkness will continue to have control over our lives. Prayer will be without power and understanding and will continue to go unanswered.
The sacrifice of The Son at Calvary and His resurrection from the dead after three days gives all those who believe in Him eternal life. Praise God! The moment you accept this Truth, you will be born again into Christ Jesus.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. – John 3:16-17

Can Obedience Overcome Unanswered Prayer?
God, The Father gave The Law to Moses and wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger on tablets of stone.
And God spoke all these words, saying: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. “You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
“You shall not murder.
“You shall not commit adultery.
“You shall not steal.
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor’s.” – Exodus 20:20 KJV
Jesus Christ, The Son of God, gave His followers One Commandment;
A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. – John 13:34 KJV
- Following God’s Teaching
The Ten Commandments form the basis of The Law and God’s covenant with His children. Christians call this The Old Covenant (Old Testament). The New Covenant (New Testament) is The Law of Love, given to us by Jesus Christ – who came and fulfilled The Old Covenant by fulfilling every part of The Law.
As believers in Christ, we no longer live under The Old Covenant. We live in Christ. We look to Him and His work – His substitutionary sacrifice at Calvary – for our salvation. The children of Israel looked to The Law of Moses (and the fulfilling of The Ten Commandments) for salvation.
Does this mean we are no longer bound by The Ten Commandments?
In fact, if you try to follow The Law you have rejected grace and the gift of salvation. (see Romans 6)
But don’t be fooled!
Jesus spoke to His followers and made it clear that He came to show us The Way to salvation, and that way is not one of sin in the eyes of Our Father in Heaven. In the book of Matthew (Chapter 5) we hear Jesus talking to the multitudes following Him. He speaks first of the blessing prepared for those who have come to Him in faith and then speaks of The Law – taking the ten commandments to a level of obedience far greater than The Old Covenant required;
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. – Matthew 5:27-28 KJV
We see that while The Law was fulfilled, it was not done away with. In fact, we are required to walk a more holy path than before when we follow The Law of Love.
The only way we can do this is by being led by The Holy Spirit, once we have been born-again.
As believers in Christ, this is part of our journey. It isn’t easy, and there are times we fall into temptation. He is there for us, though, to lift us back onto our feet, guide us, and forgive us when we fall from grace into sin.
When we follow the teachings of Jesus Christ – and obey His commandments – we can come to Him in prayer with confidence knowing His Word and His promise to us in John 15:7;
If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Obedience to Christ is rewarded in prayer – don’t doubt it!
Why Inaction Results in Unanswered Prayer
- Growing and Walking in Faith
Will Resentment result in Unanswered Prayer?
Our purpose in this world when we have been born-again is to become more Christ-like. To share His Word. To feed His children. To love others, as He loved us.
This is only made possible through the baptism into Christ when we are re-born.
Without His Spirit leading, guiding, teaching and convicting us of our sins, we cannot change and we will never be made right with God, The Father.
The Apostle Paul tells us clearly in 2 Corinthians 5:21;
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Jesus Christ, The Son of God, was made sin and judged instead of you and me. He paid your debt in full for all the wrongdoing you have committed and ever will commit. He was judged, the wrath of God came upon Him on the cross, and He went to Hell for three days – as punishment for the sins of mankind.
God forgave you and me, even when we were sinners. Praise God!
So why do we hold grudges against others – expect our Father to ignore the unforgiveness in our hearts – and still expect Him to answer our prayers?
- What Forgiveness can do for You
Jesus told His followers to lay aside any and all unforgiveness;
Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. – Matthew 5:23-24 KJV
Ask God to help you find forgiveness if you are struggling to forgive. Ask God to bring any old grudges or scars to the surface in prayer and He will help you to remove this burden on your heart. He will carry this load for you! God wants you to pray with purpose and His promise is to remove the pain.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. – Matthew 11:28-30 KJV
