What is Faith?
Religion has caused a great amount of confusion when it comes to faith.
Catholics, Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus (as well as others) all claim to follow a certain “faith”. They speak of “faith” in the same way they speak of their belief system and use the word freely and loosely – as a result, it has lost its meaning. So what is faith?
Faith is not religion. Faith is not a belief system. Faith is not God.
Faith is believing in The Word of God.
Faith is knowing in your heart that God’s Word is His promise – and believing that God’s promise cannot and will not be broken.
The Apostle Paul described faith in this way;
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. – Hebrews 1:1
Faith is certainty in God’s Word – His promise, His provision, His protection, His character, His Truth. Faith allows us to come to God in prayer, knowing that what we ask for He will deliver, and believing that even though we may not yet see the thing He has given to us, it has been provided by God and is already on its way to us.
How Do You Get Faith?
Faith is given to us by God. He tells us clearly in His Word;
For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. – Romans 12:3
The Apostle Paul explains to the new believers in Rome that faith was given to each of them at salvation (by grace); and that each man has a measure of faith. This would have to be true because it is by faith (belief in something hoped for but not yet seen) that we are saved by the grace of God. We cannot be saved until we believe God’s promise to save us. When we search for God, we find His promise of salvation and believe by faith in The Living God.
If YOU are saved – Don’t doubt that you have faith!
Can You Lose Your Faith?
NO. The seed (measure) of faith is planted within your spirit the moment you are saved. You can waver. You can falter. You can stumble. Your belief can collapse like a paper house in the wind but your faith will still be there – somewhere.
Jesus told His disciples;
…for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. – Matthew 17:20
Even a tiny fragment of faith is enough – come to God in prayer with whatever you have and He will do the rest! Only believe.
Does Faith Grow?
YES. Faith grows when we act on our belief in The Word of God and see His miracles manifested in our lives and the lives of others.
We must know the will of God (what He says in His Word) to come to Him in prayer – believing He will answer our prayer – and act on our understanding of His Word to continually build faith. This is faith with works, as James described in his writing;
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. – James 2-14
Don’t be confused by what James describes as “works” – he is not talking about good deeds to earn salvation. James is talking about acting on our faith (belief in God’s Word), as believers and followers of Jesus Christ. If we do not act on The Word, our faith will not grow.
Don’t pray for faith – act on it!
Is Faith The Key to Unlocking God’s Miracles in Your Life?
YES. Faith is the answer. By faith, we believe in Jesus Christ. By faith, we are saved from the judgment of our sins. By faith, we inherit all that our Father has promised to us.
With faith, we know we please God;
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. – Hebrews 11:6
With faith, we know our prayers are answered even before we see the answer to our prayer;
For we walk by faith, not by sight: – 2 Corinthians 5:7
Don’t doubt your faith. Doubt your doubts!
